Golf Ireland has extended its congratulations to Rory McIlroy following a sensational back-to-back victory at the Masters in Augusta.

The Holywood golfer secured his second green jacket when he finished on 12-under par, one shot clear of World No 1 Scottie Scheffler.

It was an elusive first win here last year which completed the Grand Slam and McIlroy now joins an illustrious group to win two-in-a-row at the Masters, where he sits alongside Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.

The World No 2 has also won six Majors and his continued excellence and standing at the top of the global stage reflects the strength of the game at home in Ireland.

Shane Lowry had a solid week at the Masters again this year too, where he finished T30, and his Open victory at Royal Portrush in 2019 is one of 12 Irish Major titles since Padraig Harrington’s success at Carnoustie in 2007.

Harrington won three Majors before Graeme McDowell’s triumph at the US Open in 2010, McIlroy and Darren Clarke were victorious the following year in the US Open and The Open, while McIlroy has now added five more Major crowns.

McIlroy’s journey began on the Irish amateur circuit and last year we fittingly celebrated the 20th anniversary of his first West of Ireland success at Co Sligo, before he backed that up again in 2006. He did likewise with the AIG Irish Men’s Amateur Close, all en route to his Silver Medal at The Open in 2007, when Harrington began the latest wave of Irish triumphs at the elite level.

This victory in Augusta builds on his Amgen Irish Open success and Europe’s win in the Ryder Cup at Bethpage last year, where McIlroy and Lowry both played crucial roles that week. Their remarkable consistency continues to set the standard worldwide.

At Golf Ireland we continue to work with our vast network of clubs, volunteers and stakeholders to grow the game ensuring it remains accessible, inclusive and sustainable while maintaining a legacy.

We are responsible for the development, promotion and administration of golf on the island of Ireland, where 1.5 million people played the game in 2025, and weeks like this show the value of those efforts.

“It was amazing to experience Rory winning his first green jacket last year, but winning back-to-back Masters titles is a remarkable achievement and says a lot about his incredible consistency at the very highest level,” said Golf Ireland CEO Mark Kennelly.

“What he did here last year in completing the Grand Slam was historic, and to come back and do it again 12 months later, with all that comes with it, is hugely impressive. It reflects not just his ability but his mindset.

“For Irish golf, days like this really matter from the grassroots right through to our high-performance amateurs and professionals. This gives people a lift, it brings energy into clubs, and reminds everyone of the strength of the game.

“Rory came through the club system in Ireland, and that connection is still there. There’s a real sense of pride in seeing him achieve something like this, and it’s another special moment for Irish golf.”
