The European Senior Team Championships take place next week
The Irish Senior Men’s team will look to retain their European Senior Men’s Team Championship title when they tee up at Cabot Bordeaux, France next week.
Ireland defeated France in the final at Diamond Country Club in Austria last year in a tight battle, with Joe Lyons (Galway) securing the decisive point to deliver Ireland’s first European Senior Men’s Team Championship crown since 2017.
Lyons returns to the team in impressive form, having won the Whirlpool Irish Senior Men’s Amateur Close and Irish Senior Men’s Open Championship this year. He will be joined by Irish Senior Men’s Amateur Close Match-Play champion Alan Condren (Greystones), who won his second Close title at Enniscorthy just 11 days ago.
Karl Bornemann (Douglas) also returns to the team, while Garry Cullen (Malahide), Fergal Kennedy (The Island) and Rory Leonard (Banbridge) complete the selection.
Whirlpool Irish Senior Women’s Amateur Close Match-Play champion Tracy Eakin (Dooks) is part of another strong selection for the European Senior Women’s Team Championship at BlackSeaRama, Bulgaria.
Gail Linter (Belvoir Park), Deirdre Smith (Co. Louth), Alison Taylor (Malahide) and Laura Webb (Royal Portrush) all return to the side that competed in Spain last year, while Maria O’Reilly (Headfort) rounds out the squad.
Both championships take place from 1 – 5 September.
