L-R: Cian Bennis (Annesley Williams Skoda), Jeanne Mahony (Captain Sutton GC), Michael McGeady (winner), Mark Hogan (Captain Sutton GC)
Michael McGeady laid to rest past demons by edging close friend Colm Moriarty to win the Annesley Williams 9-Hole Matchplay at Sutton Golf Club.
The Derry native came through treacherous morning conditions, holding off Michael McDermott and two-time winner Tim Rice.
Moriarty beat Conor O’Rourke in a playoff and seven-time winner Richard Kilpatrick to reach the final.
There was little between them. Level after four, an unfortunate break for Moriarty at the eighth opened the door for McGeady to go one up and he held firm down the last and sank a six-footer to win.
“I’m delighted,” said the former beaten finalist. “I just said stick to the process, don’t worry about the result. I was thinking about committing to the stroke. Thankfully it went in.”
“It was fairly scrappy. I was just trying not to make mistakes. Colm got unlucky on eight.”
It was a great weekend for McGeady, who was unsure about entering because of his daughter’s 16th birthday. He left with the trophy and Oasis tickets.
His third win of the season helped him finish in the top 10 in the final Elavon Order of Merit.
