Fota Island’s John Doyle picked up his second championship win in as many weeks at Cork Golf Club when he claimed the C20 Group Munster Men’s Stroke Play Amateur Open Championship by a shot.

Nine days after winning the Flogas Irish Boys’ Championship by four strokes, the 17-year-old entered the third and final round five shots behind Dundalk’s Eoin Murphy.

But he continued his aggressive approach and made eight birdies in a sensational six-under 66 to win by a shot from Murphy and Clandeboye’s Ross Latimer on six-under.

“I knew a score was out there, but I just hadn’t done it yet”, said Doyle. “I was thinking just to try and go low and just make my fair share of birdies and just play aggressive.”

Birdies dropped on four of his opening six holes, and while he double-bogeyed the eighth after a power lip-out, he struck to his gameplan and birdied the 11th, 12th, 13th and 17th to set a target nobody could match.

“I’m delighted with it, to be fair, Doyle said. “I feel like I have a good chance when I come here, but I still have to do it. I did not put myself in a great spot heading into the final round, but I’m just delighted I did what I did this afternoon.

“They were both there for the final round, which was nice, just to have them both there, cheering me on. I was just delighted to win with them there. It feels good.”
