Murphy shows class with course record 62 at Doonbeg.

Gary Murphy played 292 events on the DP World Tour and while he now plies his trade on the Legends Tour, the 52-year-old Kilkenny man hasn’t lost his ability to go low.

He shot 64 three times on the European Tour and came close to glory when he finish tied third in the Irish Open at Adare Manor in 2008.

He made his way to the European Tour the hard way, earning experience on the Asian Tour and the Challenge Tour before breaking through.

But in his 17 years on tour, he never carded a round like the course record 10-under 62 he carded in a recent singles competition at Doonbeg.

Despite only making par at the par-five first and running up a bogey at the par-three ninth, he was on fire in between as he birdied the second and third, then eagled the fourth and birdied the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth.

Out in seven-under 30, he failed to birdie the par-five 10th but he wasn’t finished with his scoring streak.

He added further birdies at the 12th, 13th and 14th and while he bogeyed the par-three 16th, he closed a memorable round with a birdie three .

In total ,he made an eagle, 10 birdies and two bogeys and the card will no doubt have pride on place somewhere at Trump International Golf Links Ireland.

As a Cats fan, he’d have enjoyed making his mark in the Banner County.
