Robert Moran secured the Christy O’Connor Jnr Memorial Trophy and a spot in September’s Amgen Irish Open when he finished as the leading Irishman in the Irish Challenge at Killeen Castle.

The 26-year-old Castle golfer played his last seven holes in five-under par and closed with a 69 to finish solo fourth on six-under, five shots behind France’s Oihan Guillamoundeguy.

He was honoured to add his name to the trophy named after the late Ryder Cup legend.

“To win a trophy named after one of Irish golf’s legends is amazing,” he said. “It was a great opportunity this week, and I’m delighted to have taken it.

“I’ve played The K Club a good few times, as it is 30 minutes from my house. The Amgen Irish Open in a few weeks will be fun.”

Paul McBride birdied the 18th to shoot 71 and tie for fifth with Italian Stefano Mazzoli, Swiss Benjamin Rusch, Danish Gustav Frimodt and Englishman Will Enefer on five under par.
