Historic Kerry course embarks on significant multi-year enhancement programme

Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, established in 1893, is pleased to announce the commencement of the Mahony’s Point Upgrade Project, a significant multi-year investment programme designed to enhance and preserve one of Ireland’s most scenic golf courses.

A former host of the Women’s Irish Open, Mahony’s Point is home to the iconic 18th hole, widely regarded as one of the world’s finest par 3s and recently recognised by Golf Monthly to be among the greatest finishing holes in golf.

The project will focus primarily on the comprehensive redesign and reconstruction of all bunker complexes and teeing areas across the course. The improvements will enhance the overall golfing experience while carefully preserving the character and identity that have made Mahony’s Point so admired.

The Mahony’s Point Upgrade Project received member approval earlier this year, with the detailed design and planning work progressing in preparation for construction. The design team is led by golf course architect Jeff Lynch of ReGolf, who has worked closely with the Club, the Mahony’s Point Steering Group and Synergy Golf in developing the plans for the course.

Atlantic Golf Construction has been appointed as the preferred construction partner for the Mahony’s Point Upgrade Project. Based in County Kerry, the company has delivered projects at several of Ireland’s leading golf venues, including Adare Manor, the host venue of the 2027 Ryder Cup, as well as Ballybunion, Tralee and Lahinch.

The project will be delivered over two phases. Phase One commenced on 5th October 2026 and is scheduled for completion by April 2027, when the upgraded holes will reopen for the 2027 season. Phase Two is scheduled to commence in October 2027 and be completed by April 2028. All 18 holes will have been upgraded at this point.

From the outset, our focus has been on enhancing the course while respecting the qualities that make it so unique. Working alongside Jeff Lynch and the wider project team, we believe the planned improvements will further strengthen Mahony’s Point’s reputation as one of Ireland’s great golf courses.”

Lead designer Jeff Lynch added:

“Mahony’s Point is blessed with an exceptional natural setting and a strong golfing heritage. This project has been about identifying where meaningful improvements can be made while remaining faithful to the course’s character. The redesigned tees and bunkers will enhance both presentation and performance, ensuring Mahony’s Point continues to offer a first-class golfing experience for generations to come.”

A spokesperson for Atlantic Golf Construction said:

“We are delighted to be working with Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, Jeff Lynch and Synergy Golf and look forward to helping deliver this exciting new chapter for Mahony’s Point.”

As work commences, the Mahony’s Point Upgrade Project represents an important investment in the future of one of Ireland’s great golf courses. Upon completion, the project will further enhance the Mahony’s Point reputation, while also preserving the character, heritage and natural beauty that have made it a favourite among golfers for generations.
