Madeira’s status as a golf destination of growing international prominence has received a series of major endorsements with the Portuguese archipelago having been chosen to host an array of key tournaments for professionals, amateurs and juniors this autumn.
The islands’ annual golf calendar has never been busier with all three of Madeira’s courses – Palheiro Golf, Clube de Golf Santo da Serra and Porto Santo Golfe – selected to stage high-profile events in the coming months, including a qualifying event on the Faldo Junior Tour for the first time.
The busy period will begin in Porto Santo in September when the island’s golf club hosts the ninth edition of the Colombo’s Golf Trophy. Taking place on September 16, the annual event is one of the most popular on the club’s calendar, with players from all over Europe taking part.
A fortnight later, leading professionals from the Iberia peninsula and beyond will gather at Porto Santo from September 29 to October 3 to contest the Porto Santo Iberian Open before the action switches to the Madeira mainland.
For the first time in its history, Palheiro Golf will have the honour of hosting a Portuguese Golf Federation tournament when the fifth edition of the Mid-Amateur & Senior Circuit takes place from October 3-4. Marking an important milestone for the club, players can count on a championship-level course presentation, traditional Madeiran hospitality and a high-quality competitive environment, with the event reinforcing Palheiro’s position as a leading venue for international competition.
Completing the schedule and another first for the Portuguese archipelago will be the Faldo Junior Tour event, which will be played at Santo da Serra from October 16-18.
Enhancing the club’s reputation for developing the next generation of golfers and placing Madeira at the heart of international junior golf, the 54-hole competition will count towards the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), with players competing across four age categories – boys’ and girls’ under-18 and boys’ and girls’ under-21 – for the opportunity to win a place at the Faldo Junior Tour European Grand Final in November.
A spokesperson for the Madeira Promotion Bureau said: “This exceptional calendar of events highlights the strength and diversity of Madeira’s golf offering. From elite professional competition to the next generation of golfing talent, we are proud to welcome players from around the world and further strengthen Madeira’s position as one of Europe’s most exciting and fastest-growing golf destinations.”
Named as the ‘World’s Leading Island Destination’ for the 11th year in a row at the 2025 World Travel Awards, Madeira‘s impressive golf and lifestyle offering combined with a temperate climate make it the perfect year-round location for a golf break.
And Madeira is set to enhance its reputation as one of Europe’s fastest growing golf destinations after recently confirming plans to open 36 new holes in the archipelago.
The holiday island is already set to welcome a fourth golf venue when an 18-hole championship course designed by six-time Major champion Sir Nick Faldo opens at Ponta do Pargo in 2027. But, in addition to that, the Madeira government has unveiled plans to create two new nine-hole courses at Santo da Serra and Porto Santo.
Located approximately 1,000km from the European mainland – and just 500km from the African continent – Madeira enjoys an amazingly mild climate, ranging from 25°c in the summer to 17°c in the winter, with very mild average temperatures and moderate humidity, making it the perfect year-round location for a golf break.
The best way for travelling golfers to experience the idyllic islands is with the Madeira Golf Passport, which includes three rounds of golf at either Clube de Golf Santo da Serra or Palheiro Golf from just €310 per person. The passport – which includes free transfers between course and hotel – can be upgraded to include additional rounds and a day at Porto Santo Golfe, and getting to the Portuguese archipelago couldn’t be easier with an array of direct flights making the destination easily accessible for golfers from key international markets. Indeed, Madeira enjoys excellent air connections with major European cities and a direct flight to the United States, ensuring convenient year-round access for visitors from across the globe.
