Monkstown Golf Cub is one of the best tests in Munster and the club has jumped at the opportunity to showcase its enhanced facilities by staging the 115th Irish Professional Championship from August 4-7.
Founded in 1908, the club has invested in significant improvements in its infrastructure, spending more than €900,000 over the last two years on a full course bunker upgrade, an expansive short game practice facility and a 10-bay golf academy with Trackman room and custom fitting centre.
The upgrades and improvements have enhanced the club, where general manager David O’Sullivan, head professional Cian MacNamara, and his assistants comprise one of the best PGA teams in the country.
It’s the first time the PGA in Ireland’s flagship championship will be staged in the Cork area since 1997 when Paul McGinley claimed the first of his four titles at Fota Island.
“At the PGA, we were very keen to bring the championship to Munster, and Monkstown is an ideal venue for it,” said PGA in Ireland Manager Conor Dillon.
“It’s a hugely significant event with a who’s who of past winners, including Christy O’Connor Snr and Harry Bradshaw, who won it ten times each.
“We are really looking forward to the championship in August and I’m sure everyone at Monkstown will be treated to a festival of golf and will make this an event to remember on the Elavon PGA in Ireland circuit.”
Club Chairman Michael Doorley is excited about the prospect of staging the event “We are delighted that this prestigious event is coming to Monkstown this year and we are looking forward to making it a memorable event for all concerned,” he said.
“In our initial discussions, we all felt that this event was too exciting and too much of an opportunity for the club to miss out on, and we have already started planning, selling pro-am teams and discussing ideas for the event.
“We are determined to make this one of the stand-out events on the 2025 PGA in Ireland circuit, and we are sure we can help deliver on that promise for the players, Irish PGA region and also for our members and visitors who will come to watch the best PGA professionals in Ireland.”
